Hidden Gems of Greece
Peloponnese
Legends surround the Peloponnese. The accessibility to Athens, the picturesque resorts, and the excellent sights draw many visitors to the Peloponnese every year. Since prehistoric times, it has been Greece's primary field of activity. Hercules fought the Nemean lion here; gods walked the Earth meddling in human affairs; Paris of Troy eloped with Helen here; the Argonauts set sail in pursuit of the Golden Fleece. Aside from its celestial and mythological charms, this territory retains visible traces of the numerous civilisations that formerly called it home, as evidenced by ancient temples, Mycenaean palaces, Byzantine cities, and Ottoman, Frankish, and Venetian fortifications.
Mycenae
Mycenae is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Greece. It is situated in the Argolis area, between Argos and Nafplion. Mycenae, a prosperous town in ancient times, gave its name to the Mycenaean civilization, which existed from 1,600 to 1,000 BC. Although this civilization spread throughout the region, the capital was Mycenae, the kingdom of the mythical king Agamemnon, ruler of the Greeks during the Trojan War. The old capital was encircled by huge walls, and the most notable tourist spot is the Lion Gate with two female stone lions atop, which serves as the entrance of Mycenae
Monemvasia
Monemvasia, built by the Byzantines in the sixth century, is a stunning mediaeval tower town on the Peloponnese's southeastern shore. Explore this magical stone-built town, perched at the edge of a large rock by the sea, and immerse yourself in a distinct mediaeval ambience. Your adventure through time begins the moment you enter the castle. You get to examine the history of the castle, known as the "Gibraltar of the East," which has been inhabited by the Byzantines, Crusaders, Venetians, and Turks. Explore the small cobblestone lanes and appreciate the elegantly renovated stone structures. Spend a special evening at a stone-built tower and savour gourmet delicacies in a fine restaurant on the roof of a tower house.
Delphi
One of the most important and famous archaeological sites in Greece, Delphi offers a beautiful natural landscape on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. It is home to the iconic oracle of Delphi. It was renowned in Ancient Greece when pilgrims from everywhere in the Mediterranean would come to visit and receive prophecies from Apollo, the ancient Greek God. These prophecies were given out in the world by Pythia, the high priestess of the temple. Delphi is known as the Navel of the Earth, which scientifically means that it is the centre point of our planet. Explore Delphi with Myflightpal to go back to ancient times.
Meteora
Meteora is considered the most impressive region on the island of Greece. It is in Thessaly, the northern side of Greece, a World Heritage Site. The city has many monasteries of the Byzantine empire on rock formations. The natural scenery is 60 million years old. Meteora is accessible by car or KTEL bus, and there is also a train station in the nearby town of Kalambaka. Religious tourism is famous in this region. Every year, a large number of tourists come to see the six beautiful monasteries perched on the top of the rock formations. Only six of the 25 monasteries built there during the Byzantine period are still operational and open to the public. However, the historic monasteries are not the only reason for tourists to rush to this location; many visitors also come to hike or rock-climb, two of the most popular activities here.
